Debris Free Bonaire was first set up in October 2012...
Debris Free Bonaire was first set up in October 2012 by Dive Friend Carolyn. Back then, we never anticipated the project to be such a huge success! The response we received from locals and visitors to Bonaire was overwhelming - from the start we had a great turn outs for our clean-up events. Within a short amount time, we gathered a number of volunteers and sponsors - local and international. It is encouraging to see how many people care for the oceans and support our project!
The core of the initial Debris Free Bonaire project has consistently been ongoing across the island; motivated and passionate people just like you, grabbing a mesh bag, filling it up with trash, and returning it to Dive Friends @ Hamlet Oasis. Since the launch of Debris Free Bonaire in 2012, multiple groups of people have started larger scale initiatives.
With such a high interest level and development of additional shore line clean up groups across the island to keep Bonaire debris free, Debris Free Bonaire made the decision to re-brand and re-launch in the beginning of 2018. By the end of 2018, Debris Free Bonaire fully re-focused its efforts on underwater clean ups and offering more education programs and courses for divers living on and visiting Bonaire.
Today, Dive Friends Bonaire in partnership with Debris Free Bonaire hosts the famous Quarterly Clean Up Dive 4 times each year to continue addressing the issue of marine debris on the reef's here on Bonaire. Additionally, we have adopted every Dive Friends Bonaire house reefs through the Project AWARE Adopt-A-Dive-Site Program. Doing this, we pledge to conduct monthly clean-up dives on each house reef and
report our findings to Project AWARE.
We also go the extra mile by offering the Project AWARE Dive Against Debris Specialty course in partnership with Dive Friends Bonaire. This encourages divers, just like you, to not only be aware and help take debris out of the marine environment, but also to be advocates of change at home and in their own communities - preventing debris from entering into waterways in the first place.
